KHAF Half Moon Bay — local VFR procedures
Not for navigation. These are locally published VFR routes, reproduced with sources; verify against the official documents linked from each procedure before flight.
Right traffic for runway 30, left traffic for runway 12 — the pattern stays west, over the water, away from Moss Beach, Montara and El Granada. TPA 1,000' MSL. High terrain east and south of the field. Noise-sensitive areas lie northwest through northeast. The Chart Supplement also asks pilots to avoid flying directly over the Pillar Point Air Force Station.
VFR arrivals
All arrivals — 12 / 30
- Arrival & Pattern Guidance — Arriving from the west, overfly the field at 1,500' MSL and re-enter on a 45° at 1,000'; right traffic 30, left traffic 12; expect turbulence on final to 12.
VFR departures
Runway 30
- Runway 30 Departure — Right crosswind as soon as safe below pattern altitude — turning before the end of airport property keeps you off Moss Beach and Montara; hold TPA on downwind for El Granada.
Other local procedures
Runway 12
- Calm-Wind Departure — For noise abatement, departures go southeasterly when the wind is under 5 knots — typically used in the mornings.
All operations — 12 / 30
- Pattern Work & Quiet Hours — Five touch-and-goes or fewer per flight; none before 0800 weekdays / 0930 weekends, or after two hours past sunset / 1800.
- County Airport Regulations (Ordinance 02613) — Binding county rules: no turn after takeoff until the airport boundary and 400 ft, 45° downwind entry, no formation flying or acrobatics in the traffic area, and no straight-in approaches at this non-towered field.
These routes are advisory as published — none of them is a regulation. Assigned by ATC in Class B, C or D airspace, a route becomes an ATC instruction under 14 CFR 91.123; “unable” remains available to the pilot in command. Each procedure page shows its own authority level and links its primary sources.
