noise abatement Airport sponsor published verified 2026-10-07 (2 d ago)

Published by the airport sponsor; voluntary unless ATC assigns it. If ATC assigns this route to you in Class B, C or D airspace, that assignment is an ATC instruction and compliance is required (14 CFR 91.123) — and “unable” remains available to the pilot in command.

Voluntary noise procedures: prop RPM management, pattern climb profiles, and altitude over noise-sensitive areas.

The route

  1. Constant-speed propeller: after takeoff, reduce propeller RPM when at safe altitude at or below 700'; RPM may be increased when clear of noise sensitive areas or 2,000'. On approach, do not increase the propeller to full RPM until power has been reduced to final approach power
  2. Take-offs remaining in the pattern: climb at Vy or Vx (or a combination) to at least 700' before turning crosswind; at 1,000' throttle down to pattern power and fly a close-in downwind west of I-405; avoid descending below 800' over Kennydale or Renton East Hill
  3. Departures leaving the pattern: climb at Vy or Vx (or a combination) until reaching 1,000' and thereafter at cruise climb speed to departure altitude
  4. Maintain the highest FAA-advised altitude over noise-sensitive residential areas; honor the voluntary curfew of nighttime engine maintenance run-ups

When it applies

Source text, verbatim

Noise abatement procedures at Renton Airport are voluntary measures by pilots to "fly friendly" and be good neighbors to the citizens who live under aircraft flight paths. Pilots should only deviate from these procedures when necessary to comply with any Air Traffic Control requests or in the interest of safety. Pilots of large or turbine-powered aircraft must comply with the provisions of FAR 91.129(e), rather than these procedures. All altitudes are MSL.
