transition route Airport sponsor published verified 2026-08-28 (42 d ago)
Published by the airport sponsor; voluntary unless ATC assigns it. If ATC assigns this route to you in Class B, C or D airspace, that assignment is an ATC instruction and compliance is required (14 CFR 91.123) — and “unable” remains available to the pilot in command.
Five named advisory routes — Echo, Meadowlands, November, Sierra and Whiskey — with Meadowlands preferred 2200-0700.
The route
- ECHO (north through east) — arrival: from the George Washington Bridge to I-80 and south to TEB. Departure: north to I-80 and east to the GWB
- MEADOWLANDS (preferred 2200-0700, avoid residential areas) — arrival: from the Lincoln Tunnel west via Rt. 3, north along the east extension of I-95 to the Vincent Lombardi Service Area, southwest to the Meadowlands Sports Complex, cross between stadium and race track, intercept Berry's Creek, north to TEB. Departure reverses it
- NOVEMBER (north/northwest) — arrival: from Garden State Plaza south along Rt. 17 until abeam the WABC-AM antenna, then direct TEB, remaining west of the runways and avoiding areas west of Rt. 17
- SIERRA (south/southeast, stay south of Moonachie Avenue) — for helicopters below 6,000 lbs or low noise profiles: west from the Lincoln Tunnel or North Hudson Park via the I-95 east extension to the Vincent Lombardi Service Area, then direct TEB along Moonachie Ave
- WHISKEY (south through west) — arrival: from Rt. 3 and the Garden State Parkway east along Rt. 3 to Berry's Creek Bridge, then north direct to TEB over Berry's Creek parallel to Rt. 17
- Except on the Meadowlands Route, maintain at least 1,000 ft MSL as long as possible on arrival and as soon as possible on departure; Meadowlands uses 500 ft MSL
Where it actually is
North up. The sponsor names these landmarks and publishes no coordinate for any of them — everything positioned here is derived, and each coordinate's provenance is listed with its point below. Dashed markers are depicted: this site's reading of the written route, not published fixes.
- ECHO: from the George Washington Bridge George Washington Bridge The two-level suspension bridge carrying I-95 over the Hudson between Fort Lee and Manhattan, 4.7 NM east of the field. The single most conspicuous object in the area and the start of the ECHO helicopter route. satellite Apple Maps street view coordinate: OpenStreetMap contributors (ODbL)
- ECHO: to I-80, then south to TEB I-80 north of the field The point on I-80 nearest Teterboro, 1.1 NM north. A line, not a point — the ECHO helicopter route follows the freeway. satellite Apple Maps street view coordinate: OpenStreetMap contributors (ODbL) (nearest point on I-80 to the airport reference point)
- MEADOWLANDS and SIERRA: from the Lincoln Tunnel Lincoln Tunnel (New Jersey portal) The helix and toll plaza on the Weehawken side, where Route 495 drops into the Palisades. 5.5 NM south-southeast of the field. satellite Apple Maps street view coordinate: OpenStreetMap contributors (ODbL)
- SIERRA: or from North Hudson Park North Hudson Park The park on top of the Palisades in North Bergen, with its lake, 4.5 NM southeast of the field. satellite Apple Maps street view coordinate: OpenStreetMap contributors (ODbL)
- MEADOWLANDS and SIERRA: the Vince Lombardi Service Area Vince Lombardi Service Area The New Jersey Turnpike service area at Ridgefield, on the eastern spur. A lit island of fuel canopies and parked trucks in otherwise dark marsh — which is why two helicopter routes turn over it. satellite Apple Maps street view coordinate: OpenStreetMap contributors (ODbL)
- MEADOWLANDS: cross between the stadium... MetLife Stadium The big open bowl in the Meadowlands Sports Complex, 2.5 NM southwest of the field. satellite Apple Maps street view coordinate: OpenStreetMap contributors (ODbL)
- ...and the race track Meadowlands Racetrack The harness track and grandstand immediately north of the stadium. The MEADOWLANDS helicopter route threads the gap between the two. satellite Apple Maps street view coordinate: OpenStreetMap contributors (ODbL)
- SIERRA: stay south of Moonachie Avenue, then track it in Moonachie Avenue County Route 36, running east-west immediately south of the airport. It is a LINE, not a point: the SIERRA helicopter route stays south of it and then tracks along it. This pin is a representative point. satellite Apple Maps street view coordinate: OpenStreetMap contributors (ODbL)
- WHISKEY: east on Rt 3 to Berry's Creek Bridge Berry's Creek Bridge (Route 3) Where Route 3 crosses Berry's Creek in the Meadowlands, 2.9 NM southwest of the field. The creek is the only winding water in a grid of highway and marsh. satellite Apple Maps street view coordinate: OpenStreetMap contributors (ODbL) (computed crossing of NJ 3 and the Berrys Creek waterway)
- NOVEMBER: from Garden State Plaza Westfield Garden State Plaza A very large enclosed mall with ringed parking decks at the Route 4 / Route 17 junction in Paramus, 4.2 NM north of the field. satellite Apple Maps street view coordinate: OpenStreetMap contributors (ODbL)
- NOVEMBER: south on Rt 17 to here Route 17 abeam the WABC antenna Your position on Route 17 when the WABC-AM array comes abeam — the NOVEMBER route's turn cue. The antenna is 0.24 NM to the west of here; the road is the thing you are following. satellite Apple Maps street view coordinate: OpenStreetMap contributors (ODbL) (nearest point on NJ 17 to the antenna array)
- NOVEMBER: abeam the WABC-AM antenna, then direct TEB WABC-AM antenna A guyed AM broadcast array in the marsh at Lodi, about 2.0 NM north-northwest of the field; lit towers with no other tall structure near them. The NOVEMBER helicopter route turns inbound when it comes abeam. satellite Apple Maps street view coordinate: OpenStreetMap contributors (ODbL) (man_made=mast array at the Lodi transmitter site, centroid of the towers)
- All five routes begin or end on the field Teterboro Airport Four runways on the floor of the Hackensack Meadowlands, hemmed in by Route 17 to the west, Route 46 and I-80 to the north and the marsh to the south. Manhattan is 7 NM east beyond the Hudson. satellite Apple Maps coordinate: FAA airport record (NASR), airport reference point
This entry describes several named routes, so the landmarks are plotted and no single track is drawn. TETERBORO AIRPORT HELICOPTER NOISE ABATEMENT ROUTES, PROCEDURES AND COORDINATES TEB Helicopter Routes Are Advisory Only. TEB routes provide guidance when utilizing compatible land-use areas. Operator compliance with that guidance is appreciated to the extent possible to achieve safe flight and ATC requirements. TEB noise rules apply to all aircraft. Helicopter operations do not need prior approval, but helicopter departures are subject to violations. RECOMMENDED ALTITUDES: Except on the Meadowlands Route, helicopters are requested to maintain at least 1000 feet MSL as long as possible for arrival and as soon as possible for departures. Helicopters using the Meadowlands Route should maintain 500 feet MSL and 1000 MSL when advised by Air Traffic Control. HELICOPTER ROUTES - Unless noted, maneuver to/from runway extended centerlines.
