noise abatement Airport sponsor published verified 2026-08-28 (42 d ago)
Published by the airport sponsor; voluntary unless ATC assigns it. If ATC assigns this route to you in Class B, C or D airspace, that assignment is an ATC instruction and compliance is required (14 CFR 91.123) — and “unable” remains available to the pilot in command.
Normal pattern: centerline to at least ½ mile past the departure end and 500 ft before crosswind. Extended: 1 mile and 1,000 ft. Ten touch-and-goes per flight.
The route
- Limit consecutive touch-and-goes to 10 per flight
- When possible use the noise abatement climb procedure in your Aircraft Flight Manual; in its absence, maintain a high rate of climb initially until reaching 500 ft AGL
- Normal pattern: continue straight ahead along the extended runway centerline until at least ½ mile beyond the departure end and 500 ft, then turn crosswind climbing to the 1,000 ft AGL pattern altitude
- Extended pattern: continue straight ahead along the extended centerline until at least 1 mile beyond the departure end and 1,000 ft, then turn crosswind
- Make RPM setting changes slowly; avoid changing pitch over neighborhoods if able
- Minimize flight training departures during periods of heavy traffic
When it applies
- Runway 11 or 29 or 12 or 30 or 3 or 21 — all runways Written generically ("the extended runway centerline", "the departure end of the runway") — the source names no runway for these items. The accompanying touch-and-go pattern diagram is titled for runway 11/29

BEING A GOOD NEIGHBOR Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport (BZN) has developed the following recommended voluntary practices to reduce noise impacts in surrounding areas, with the understanding that Air Traffic Control and aircraft performance may override the recommended pattern at any time to ensure safety. SINGLE ENGINE AIRCRAFT Limit consecutive touch-and-goes to 10 per flight. When possible, use the noise abatement climb procedure in your Aircraft Flight Manual (AFM), in lieu of such information, maintain a high rate of climb initially until reaching 500 ft. AGL. Normal Pattern — Continue straight ahead along the extended runway centerline until reaching a point at least 1/2 mile beyond the departure end of the runway and 500 ft. (>4,673 AGL), then turn to crosswind climbing to 1,000 ft. AGL Traffic Pattern Altitude for propeller-driven aircraft. Extended Pattern — Continue straight ahead along the extended runway centerline until reaching a point at least 1 mile beyond the departure end of the runway and 1,000 ft. (>5,173 AGL), then turn to crosswind. Make RPM setting changes slowly; avoid changing pitch over neighborhoods if able.
